Web 2.0 & Business: PT.VI-Taking Care of Your PC.

Use Strong Passwords- As tempting as it might be do not use your dog’s name, 1st school, or something that is easy to figure out. Always use password with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Remember the more characters the better. Make sure to change passwords at least every 45 days or so and never use a password that’s similar to a previous one. Never share your password with anyone.

Keep Your Operating System Up-To-Date-One thing a lot of user fails to do is keep their software up to date. When a manufacturer discovers security vulnerabilities or fixes for their product they distribute the fix for it by using updates or patches. Go to the software manufactures’ websites and search for Updates.

Install Good Antivirus Software- It’s very important to have a good Antivirus program running on your PC. Make sure that you update the antivirus on a regular basis. For I’ve found it best to set the software to run scans automatically. There is free antivirus software such as AVG.

Install Spyware/Adware Removal Software-
Spyware is one of the most dangerous attacks you can get. Spyware programs can collect various types of personal information, such as Internet surfing habits, sites that have been visited, but can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, accessing websites blindly that will cause more harmful viruses, or diverting advertising revenue to a third party. These are the type of software attacks that lead to identity theft.

Scan for Viruses/Spy Ware Weekly - I can't tell you how many systems I had to repair that had Anti-Virus and Spyware protection but the owner did not up date the software or use it, they could have saved hundreds of dollars and hours of headaches by just simply running the software weekly. It’s best to configure your antivirus and spy ware to run automatically during a period when you know the PC will not be used, such as during the night just configure the software, leave the PC on the night you scheduled the software to run and the PC does the rest.

Beware of email and attachments- Email is a very common way of spreading virus and spyware. Never open any attachments unless you know the source of the file, never open any attachments with an .exe file extension, scan your attachments before opening them. Configure your antivirus to scan incoming and outgoing email.

Pop Ups- Beware of sites with lots of pop ups. Some of the pop ups are embedded with malicious and dangerous codes if clicked on they can expose you to harmful viruses and spyware. Use pop up blocker on your browser.

Software Installs-Make sure you only install software that's licensed and from approved sources.

Hardware - Be sure to keep your PC in a room that's not extremely hot, make sure nothing blocks the fans, keep your PC clean from dust and debris ( I use a can of compressed air to blow dust from the fans and keyboard ), keep liquids away from your PC, DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE ANY HARDWARE IF YOU ARE NOT SURE WHAT TO DO.
